How comfortable are you at getting uncomfortable? Getting comfortable being uncomfortable isn’t fun at first but getting to the magic is worth it. So how do you do it?

Unfortunately, much of the time where the magic happens isn’t where you naturally want to go. It’s unchartered territory and, many times, unchartered for a reason. It doesn’t feel good at first. It can be scary. I’ve experienced that firsthand more times than I care to count. Most recently, when I refocused everything in my business to revolve around interviewing people, I wasn’t sure how it would play out. It was scary not knowing when the next client would appear and the next one and so on. The important part is I kept taking daily action, no matter how small, to move closer to my goals. Some conversations were disappointing, and others were uplifting. I chose to focus on the uplifting ones and seek out more of them.

It took some time, and I found ways to focus on embracing my natural curiosity while having some fun along the way. That’s right, eventually that area outside of your comfort zone that looks dark and foreboding initially, will become exciting as you venture further into it. The first step is the most important one.

Like Attracts Like

My shift to interviewing as a business attracted people with similar interests, passion, and purpose that wanted to share their story with me and our audiences. While it hasn’t been a “hockey stick” success curve (yet), I’m getting there. Tastes of the magic here and there keep me going to send that next email or make that next call to find that next dose of magic. It’s a journey and an adventure.

When I was a teenager, my successful uncle told me “If you do what you love, the money will come”. It took me entirely too much time to “get it” but I’m glad I did. Sometimes the simple advice is the most powerful advice.

The next time you’re looking over the barrier of your comfort zone, think about the happiness and fulfillment you’ll feel after you get over the fear of being uncomfortable. Make the initial leap, taste the magic so you know what you’re chasing, rinse and repeat.

Entering New Territory

With time I bet you’ll embrace being uncomfortable and be happier as a result. The people around you will notice your personality and confidence shifts and will want to be around you more because of your new energy. The great news is that you will also start attracting people with similar interests, passion, and purpose that will support you on your new journey. You will be able to help them on their journeys as well.

I hope this inspires you to take a leap this week, even if it’s a small one. Stretch the boundaries of your comfort zone and see what happens. It might just become the welcomed surprise you’ve been looking for.
